THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN Part 1 - Teaser Trailer analysis

Please note  that I have only analysed a minute of the footage as this is a standardised time length for teaser trailers, due to the ambiguity and fast pace that is entailed within it.

The teaser begins with the institutions logo ' Summit Entertainment' which has been outlined in red. This is quite intriguing to note as usually the colours associated with this logo is sky blue suggesting  that within this film there will be themes of passion, love, hatred , fury and perhaps death.Already from the start the producers of this trailer has introduced the themes and genre just through the colour usage. The foreground is intriguing with a billowing cloud that is tinted with red again making it seem quite bloodthirsty perhaps with connotations of the war to come? Non- Diegetic sound has also been used to introduce the text, quite a dramatic sound that appears to have been recorded with cymbals emphasising a new beginning? What I have noted is that this and the horror genre often tend to replicate the same sound as a form of introduction, which makes it seem quite unoriginal but then again the audience will be able to recognise this from other films thus leaving their attention captivated.

This close-up shot has been deliberately shot in a manner that shows tights and high heel stilettos giving the impression of a promiscuous or perhaps exaggerated sexuality which suggests that they are trying to attract a generalisable audience rather than a niche female audience. The shot has been accompanied by an asynchronous  diegetic sound of footsteps that have clearly been artificially enhanced through amplifiers and volume control. This is to express perhaps her need to be heard or known, its interesting for the film to start with her footsteps which suggests that perhaps she is delivering a message and this is clearly emphasised by her long stride which expresses the severity or importance of what is about to happen.
Perhaps the focal point of this establishing/ Mid-shot is the location which it has been filmed in appearing quite historical and archaic .This is shown through the castle, empathised through the dark shadowed lighting giving a sense of mystery, as we wonder what is the purpose of this location. What does it convey to the audience? To me it represents arcristocacy and wealth but the place appears to be depict a pervading atmosphere perhaps expressed by the serious expression upon the woman's face. She is wearing a velvet maroon dress which is low cut again reinforcing this ideology of promiscuity and a supposed femininity, there is nothing masculine about the character shown here. She appears to be holding a silver platter with both hands which seems strange perhaps she is a maid or a servant, though the clothes suggest not.I really like how this shot has been set from the angle to the location.Unfortunately a castle will be off limits but perhaps an archaic/rustic/crumbling house will be something which may be quite effective.

The lighting in this shot is again quite dark and you will notice for the first part of the trailer lighting denotes the dark mood of the film or perhaps the characters shown here.In this over the shoulder shot the woman flings the door open enthusiastically, almost as though she brings news that may please her masters/ friends/acquaintances whoever they may be.She appears assertive in her mannerisms and gestures and once again the stylistic conventions of a Gothic castle is present through the large doors. These are adorned with various patterns.

This closeup depicts the silver platter that the female character is holding addressed to 'Resident Vicolo Del Forna 9 Volterra, Italy' which gives us an indication of where the location is set. This is actually a really clever device as it doesn't tell us through words exactly but the letter makes it clear where this is set.Watchers with previous knowledge will know that the 'Volterra' is the Volturi whom reinforces the rules over all Vampires so they have supreme superiority over what they can and cannot do.The letter presumably is news about a Vampire misbehaving or something along those lines as this is what they deal with.I like the idea of a letter to denote location as it is something original and frankly I haven't seen in other films before- though I'm sure its been replicated.

Here is another closeup which shows just the hands and black costume with blurring of the platter where the letter came from( as they want the audience to focus on the letter itself). The hands appear decidedly masculine which suggests that maybe it is one of the Volturi. The fact that a closeup has been used gives us the impression that the watchers are meant to take note as it is presumably important. What is intriguing to note is the constancy of closeups which suggests that they do it to personalise either the character or the object so that the audience have a clear ideal of what is happening at that particular point. It is something which i feel makes the film quite predictable which is perhaps what the target audience are after but it doesn't exactly make it an original well crafted film.

A change from the dark shots, this showcases a light airy kitchen which has been painted in soft colours of mint green and white symbolising a happier atmosphere and change of characters. The male is sat at the table his elbow on top of the table as he reads the letter , perhaps to convey either thought or anger as his he does not appear joyous at the news that he has been given. The fact that the Volturi have got a letter too makes letters a symbolic motif within the first few seconds and it makes us wonder as to why new technology has not been used e.g. emails so perhaps the sender felt that a letter would be more personalised.
This is an intriguing shot to note as you can see here it still in the transition process. You can still see he imprint of the previous frame so it makes for quite a jarring effect. The female here appears to be in a exotic beach location which is symbolism of a ' happy paradise'.However it appears as though green screen has been used here promoting the fantastical elements in the film. She is evidently exuberant at the news she has received and again reinforces my earlier comment of a 'happy paradise'.It is here we notice that the inevitability of the film staying like this is slim.
This wide high angle shot showcases the exotic tranquillity which suggests that perhaps she is on holiday and certainly her clothing- from the cutoff shorts to the t-shirt- appear to represent this. Many different plants and greenery have been shown here and the beach is just a short walk away.Just in case you didn't know she is on her honeymoon after her marriage to Edward Cullen so she can finally enjoy and relax in an environment away from her family and friends.

This mid shot displays the upper torso of  the werewolf  character ' Jacob' which is designed to display the masculine prowess that he portrays, suggesting that this is designed primarily to target a female audience. As one of the main male protagonists he has been specially chosen due to his physically attractive attributes and the effect of the rain beating down on his face implements this feature of aesthetics's.The lighting has also been dimmed to project the sense of desolation  that this scene portrays.I quite like notion  of  using rain as a form of emotion otherwise known as phatic fallacy- where the weather is a depiction of a persons mood.

Here an intriguing effect has been used of blurring the foreground, displaying how fast the frame is going per second which suggests that they have been using fast paced editing to implement a sens of dramatic irony. The use of CGI effect has also been used here for the werewolf, which makes it seem quite unrealistic but reinforces the fantastical ideology that is evident in the film due to its genre of course.

This closeup gives the audience the comprehension of what the letter patterns depicts and the calligraphic stylism enhances the importance of the prop used.Closeups are often used to enhance a particular feature  thus I think a great deal of closeups should be used as well as a particular symbol integrated in our piece.Perhaps we could have symbolism of eyes, represented in different ways?

This wide shot is intriguing and has a use of florals to symbolise the wedding scene. The lighting has been lightened as well as the contrast to express the happiness of the soon- to be married couple. This contrasts against earlier shots which were dark and gloomy, so lighting is important to appropriate the mood of the shot.We should use this effect to establish the mood and tone of our own film.
The extreme close up particularly emphasises the intertwining of the couple to supposedly depict the 'happy' couple .Notice how the hand of the female protagonist has been centred within the shot and the hand is clenched to show possession, the ring finger slightly raised to show its importance

Student trailer analysis -FULL MARKS - A GRADE - A2 Media Studies Trailer 2010 - 'Darkness Bound'

Primarily as well as analysing normative film trailers I also wanted to look at student trailers to see how they constructed their films with the limited resources that are available for students. I primarily looked at a different genres, to see what shots could be used in our own piece.
It begins with an intertitle England 2015, which suggests that its set in the future and creates a sense of ambiguity that makes the audience want to watch on.It then transcends into a park scene where children are playing, the music is tense with a strange metallic quality to it as though there is troubled times ahead. The shot is a wide shot since the background  outside of the park is visibly clear of a bustling street filled with cars and houses. To the left of the children on the swing is a group of people playing ring a roses which adds a child like quality and is something which is quite effective since it is creepy yet makes the audience wonder as to why a normative scene like this should make them feel so frightened.  I feel that we should use a wide shot like this juxtaposed against tense music as I feel that it would make an interesting combination as titled here. For example in our Romantic Drama we could have a shot of me crying against a tree trunk at the front of the frame, whereas in the foreground should be the park itself with children laughing. The laughing should be layered and echoed in order to make it seem distant, as though I am not part of society.

It then fades into a two shot of a grown up presumably the mum holding a little girls hand as the two smile each other in adoration and love. The use of the background encompasses a woodland environment with a building which I am unsure as to what it is .two shot of the two protagonists lying side by side, smiling at each other in ecstasy. The background is of a woodland grass environment it appears and adds an almost artistic quality to the film. They bound forward and the camera slows down as it reaches the end of the frame.I would like to play around with time stretch on Adobe to have a contrast between sped up footage and slow footage in order to replicate everyday life. There will be times when life is exciting and times when it drags. It then fades into black with another intertitle in the beginning with the use of elision for dramatic emphasis. into another intertitle' all was well'. This gives the audience the pragmatic understanding that everything will change. I like the idea of intertitles and think they are a.n effective way of giving information in an ambiguous manner. However I would also like to include narration as I feel that is a typical convention of Romantic Dramas i.e. like 'One Day' This then transcends into a male coming through a door and opening it, wearing a punky black tshirt with a skull imprint which suggests that he is into the rock culture, perhaps an indication of his characterisation. He comes into what is presumably a bedroom/office room  although it is hard to tell from the obscurity of the frame. He stops looking visibly shocked which makes the audience wonder as to why this is. This fades into a shot of a female on the sofa passed out or dead? This makes the audience sympathise and want to look after the female, since she appears so vulnerable and fragile.
This quickly cuts to a closeup of the boy saying ' mum' in an inquisitive frightened manner, almost in disbelief as if he cant understand what is going on. He appears puzzled and this quickly goes into another intertitle ' but then it all...'' went wrong...' At this point the non diegetic sound stops and then returns in a beat, it is slower and jagged in its rhythm which makes the audience primarily feel tense and then secondarily wonder what is going to happen next. This is a good way of captivating the audiences attention and I feel that we should create this in our own, using the rise and fall of piano keys in order to convey a particular mood. The non- diegetic
This all changes in the next scene however where the male is standing over a bridge looming dominantly in a high angle shot that specifically makes him look so. The clouds are gloomy and grey and appears as though the frames have been slightly washed out in order to show the doom and gloom. He holds the radio above his head and the audience let out a cry of shock as he flings it unmercifully into the water. I really like the use of framing in this shot as well as the vantage point which is something that I would like to replicate in our own. For example we could have me standing over the bridge, looking vulnerable so therefore using a low angle shot instead. This quickly slips into  big dark tunnel, seeming quite ominous. Then there is a fade out and over a black shot cries the voice 'where are all the adults?'. I really like the use of this technique and I think it cleverly conveys the darkness without using a shot to express that fact. This then goes into' where have they gone?' and the use of the interrogatives signify his perplexed state of mind. This then goes into the mysterious intertitleintertitle and so is effective in its place selection.

The next shot is very interesting also quite frightening. The girl is centred in the frame in a closeup to emphasise her features. Her mouth is open and her eyes are wild. Why is she like this you wonder? Is she barbaric? The barbed wire certainly indicates this. It then changes back to the male again telling his friends ' we've got to stick together'. This is effective as it shows the audience that he is inspiring them to never give up and we therefore see him as the hero. It quickly cuts to video footage of people running away shown by CTV. This makes you wonder as to what they are running from, perhaps it is the plague you muse. You then release that it is the male and all his friends and there is a voiceover which states ' the plague has spread to Europe' which supports the universal truth of disease, which historical films tend to focus on, although this is set in the future.
It then goes into a two shot of a male and female character lying in the grass side by side which also uses a mid shot. The effect of this shows there companionship as well as making the audience feel concerned for their safety as they are too young to die. The wind blows ruffling their hair and the male turns to the female and says ' we survive' in response to her question ' what do we do now'. It quicky cuts to a shot of a male character reaching out towards the screen and crying out no, although the words are not uttered merely mouthed as though he cannot speak for shock. It then quickly cuts back to the previous shot where the girl says ' no one is coming to help us are they?' and you feel sad for the character because you don't know her fate or outcome. It then goes into a shot of a male running across grassy plains, use of Gothic imagery evident through the use of stormy skies and gnarled bare trees stripped of leaves. He runs across quickly as though escaping death. This quickly and effectively goes into a pan of a graveyard as it has  a voice over detailing the death toll. Slowly it extends into an intertile with the lexis ' a race against time for humanity' suggesting that they are living on borrowed time.

Analysis of Sucker Punch

Sucker punch begins with a zoom into the (distribution company)Warner Bros emblem intriguingly imprinted onto a red curtain, before fading into( the production company) Legendary Pictures logo. This is accompanied by a voice over in a distinctly Russian accent 'You are safe' which then cuts to a two shot  in a car.The words of security suddenly don't seem so promising anymore a heavy contrast to this suspicious looking shot. The female seems asleep in heavy slumber, blond bunches giving her an appearance of vulnerability and fragility. The way that her head is turned away from the male makes it seem as though he is perhaps the antagonist, the counterpart to her role as the lead protagonist. He seems to be glancing over at her although the dark lighting makes it hard to tell.Notice how he is shrouded and he is covered in shadow. This could be used as symbolism for good and evil.Perhaps if we were doing a horror film we could use a device like this but do it to all the characters, which presents ambiguity and obscurity. There also appears to be rain splattered on the windows which is use of pathetic fallacy- when inanimate objects are personified or in this case depicts the mood of the film. The camera then zooms into the females face where another voice over is implemented 'It's all safe'

Transcending into this establishing shot the audience immediately gets the notion that her words are actually ill conceived. The sky seems tempestuous a mixture of many greys reflecting the negativity of the house that lies beyond. The clearing is dark and unwelcoming 'Lennox House' it states giving us the impression that it is very archaic and foreboding. The black railings give it the sense of restricted access, meaning that when someone is lodged here, they cant escape it-it becomes their destiny.

'What your imagining right now, that place can be real as anything' she narrates, a hint of ambiguity in her tone as it fades out, then fades into another equally gloomy shot.We now establish that this house which we may have assumed was a manor in disrepair, is actually for the mentally insane. This may come as a shock to some members but then again maybe not, again the narrators voice springs to mind 'safe', this place seems anything but safe.Reinforcing  the archaic feel of the place is the Gothic capitalised font to express the types of people lodged here. What unnerves you most about this image is the men in white who are hauling the female character into the institute. She appears to be struggling and it seems as though they are treating her as though she is a criminal shown through the fact that it requires two people to take her in.
One of the characters in white is shown here grasping her firmly, both arms wrenching her in a twisted embrace. This two shot is really intriguing as the man's face is not shown, again giving off a mask of obscurity, a nameless identity which makes the whole situation more surreal. Her childlike face seems anguished as she struggles fruitlessly, her arms outstretched trying not to succumb to her fate
'close your eyes' says the next shot ironically, in a flash sequence forwards, the inverted font simplistic in it's nature but it's message is clear- prepare to be frightened out your wits.It then fades out and fades into a closeup of the females eye's where the narrator soothes ' don't be afraid, where she slowly closes her eyes.

Here you can see that she takes pride in immaculate grooming, her eyebrows shaped, her skin clear but the significant focus here is of course her eyes. They have used sweeping false lashes, really accentuating the dark circles under her eyes, showing her lack of sleep. The black gel eyeliner has been smudged in with gold and green eyeshadow making her an object of desire, flaunting her sexuality to the audience. This is effective as it makes the audience less niche by drawing in a male audience through the use  of good looking characters.I really like the closeup eye shots as it represents a vulnerability in the character, it almost feels as though they've been exposed, allowing the audience to understand them more.We could use a shot similar to this (even if we were doing a completely different genre) but through juxtaposition- two eyes of the protagonists, one is dramatic with heavy makeup whereas the other is more naturalistic with pale colours being used such dusty pink.

Again a fade out is used before changing into a completely new scene where the narrator says ' you have all...' the rest is incomprehensible as this shot appears on screen.Again we are seeing this recurring theme of all the characters aside the female and the step dad in the car being faceless. What could this represent you ask? Are they all puppets in the grand scheme of things?

Here the person is unsheathing the long pointy sword which appears quite stealthy and dangerous, his costume that of an ancient Chinese zen warrior, adding to the enigmatic and mysterious feel of the character. The non diegetic  soundtrack is tense , amplified at certain key points to scare the audience, used as a sound bridge throughout. Behind him in the background are lit candles blazing wildly.Often candles are representations of death, as people use them as a vigil to the deceased. However here it may be used as a ritual to impose courage and stealth perhaps. It then transcends into a closeup of a wooden box containing guns, a symbol of upcoming war.
What follows next is an extremely quick flash sequence as though this is what the females mind is filtering before her time runs out, which I have not been able to process screenshots

'Your fight for survival ...'as we enter a wide shot , a blizzard scene, snow falling in large drifts, the female standing side profile dressed in entirely inappropriate clothing for the weather but also to fight creating this kind of idealised view of female fighters, suggesting they all have be dressed promiscuously or be portrayed as infantalistic. Here she is wearing an older version of a school uniform which can be compared to the Britney Spears video oops I did it again music video. The black tie top, short skirt and knee highs are certainly reminiscent of it. It then cuts to a shot of monstrous giants before the narrator concludes... 'begins now' These creatures are quite interesting as its hard to describe them but they remind me of the Chinese culture again.
It then transforms into this shot, introduced with fast paced music to implement the action of the scene. As you can see here tinted blue lighting has been used to create surrealism suggesting that this is all in her mind- further evidenced by her costume which would prove futile in war and snowy weather. The wind billows her hair wildly as she raises her head up in jolty, sharp movements, expressing that she is ready to take on anything before fading out to black. Like with any other accredited film, it states at 30 seconds other films which has been produced 'from the director of Watchmen and 300' which adds to the appeal of the film, especially since these two films did quite well in the box office.Watchmen made $185,258,983 and '300' made $456,068,181.

The female protagonist then declares ' I need to escape from here' in a mid shot using the rule of thirds. She appears to be in the asylums bedroom, talking to someone but we are not sure who, though she is facing forward. To the left side of her is a bed with a half shot of legs, but again it is a faceless identity.
Why has the director done this?
To set the mood the lighting has been dimmed but unlike the other dark shots, this one radiates a sense of security and warmth through softer lights.Perhaps this expresses how their only sanctuary is the bedroom.
It quickly transposes into a shot which could be categorised as a wide/ establishing/ over the shoulder shot where we see the female walking towards a Chinese style house, basked in the blue tinted glow the snow still falling heavily.

It then jump cuts to a wide shot of another planet which seems quite dreamlike as initiated by the wispy clouds and the large rings of Saturn looming overhead the war ridden city .The shot appears to have used CGI and has also used a sepia frame to add to the unrealistic effect. We then cut to an over the shoulder shot of a female character who we have not been introduced to yet.She is wearing a tan Alice band, her hair long and blonde, she appears to be wearing minimal makeup. For once our lead female has been blurred in the foreground as you see the other from her point of view' there are armed guards everywhere' the new one exclaims, a hint of desperation in her voice. She seems quite doubtful at the prospect of sneaking out past them.
The next over the shoulder shot shows professional looking men in black suits, who radiate a sense of a tough no nonsense attitude , hugely smirking at the blonde protagonist before them, a fenced gate behind them.'If blue finds out...' to which a multi mid shot appears on screen, showing the person in question. Blue is presumably the one flinging the doors open with reckless abandon, his suit pristine, immaculately groomed with a curt moustache, flanked by two bodyguards giving him a sense of authority. To his further left is a sobbing girl, shoulders hunched , head bowed low as though he is making her suffer.Certainly she doesn't seem pleased to see him.
'...were dead she concludes in this over the shoulder shot. She appears to be the one with authority here, initiated by the way almost everyone( apart from one) is giving her their full attention whilst she intones this dramatic sentence. They appear to be in burlesque dancer costumes, with bustiers and suspenders giving this promiscuous ideology of how women should be represented. They also appear to be in a dressing room preparing perhaps for a showcase but what makes us inquisitive is what will they do to defy Blue that is so reckless that they could die because of it?As the blonde with the pixie short hair says ' were already dead' in  a mid shot, her eyes closed in defeat. Quickly it cuts to a centred shot of our lead on a show stage, the red curtains each side of her, a spotlight behind her, her head hung low.

As the curtain closes behind her, it cuts to a closeup of the female designed to capture her fear and horror, perhaps she is worried that the plan will fail, whatever that may be.Her lips are open as though she is talking to herself perhaps to instill some faith in herself, her eyes wide open as she considers it.Quickly the shot transcends into a birds eye angle shot at 40 seconds which appears to be showing a scene of flames billowing from a stone platform displaying a sense of danger and recklessness. The flames seem to be a CGI effect as the fire is all in one area whereas if it was actual fire it would be spread out more evenly.By using the CGI it has allowed them to create an idealised view of what war should look like, rather than invoking a sense of realism.
Reinforcing this ideology is this rule of three shot which portrays these women as sexual objects through the use of costume, particularly through the baring of flesh. This is quite similar to Tomb Raider, where Angelina Jolie is presented as an object of desire as well as a female warrior. The fact that the females are fighters may be appealing to a male audience who could view them as resourceful and brave.Behind them appears to be a fortress , radiating an air of formidability, generally quite foreboding. The fact that all is dark inside the door (aside from a dimly lit lantern) perhaps symbolises that they better watch their backs as something may be lurking in the shadows.Quickly they march down the fortress bridge, two of them pointing their guns forwards whilst the other points it the side, checking that they have got each area covered in case of an ambush.

In this shot the protagonist is leant backwards as if against her will as the anguished expression so clearly conveys. The shot has used dark lighting to blend in with the brown costume choice, making it seem as though she is trying camouflage herself in these war ravaged scene couplets. Her hair is messy and wild a symbol of the chaotic disorder that its taking place and her lips are parted as though she is trying to say something but the words cannot come out.

Compare the previous shot to this here, which appears as though they are resuming a love affair. This makes us perplexed as we know that Blue is an evil character suggesting that he is trying to hurt her.Judging by expression she appears to be in pain( though this could be interpret look of longing but we know that this is not the case. The closeness of the bodies give a symbolism of  several connotations; lust, forbidden love, rape, blackmail which is dependent on the watchers interpretation. The  positioning of the antagonist is angled cleverly towards the upper part of the protagonist giving the impression that he wants to use her for her body and reinforces the ideal of women being treated as a vassal rather than a real human being.

The play then ends with this title sequence which is quite fantastical in the stylistic conventions, through the sketch art effect, an example of modernised calligraphy. The inversion of the colours ( white upon black) is often a standard method to be used in this genre as it makes the text leap of the page for the audience to sit up and notice.

analysis of insidious trailer

Insidious begins with a dramatic entrance of the intertitle 'Film district' presumably the production company, accompanied by the non-diegetic sound of a cymbal to enhance the importance of the text essentially drawing the readers attention from the very beginning. Automatically the genre of the film is introduced with the usage of the black block capital font interspersed against the deep red flames that seem to be blazing from it, suggesting that it is a horror. The shot used here is also intriguing as it seems to be slanted at an angle, which is quite off centre and therefore may be classed as a canted angle. This may be used to implement the sense that throughout the film something is not quite right.
Screenshot of the film district sequence

Then at 11 seconds the title of the film appears in an eerie manner, with the accompaniment of a haunting, non-diegetic soundtrack. The inverted white font appears quite sci-fi orientated which perhaps suggests that the film may actually be a hybrid genre, perhaps with elements of the supernatural. This is further evident through the flash effect sequence where the title appears again and the effect is quite jarring. The use of non diegetic music here is similar  to that of a fly zapper again giving us the impression that the movie is meant to unnerve you.
At 14 seconds the first piece of dialogue is introduced 'are you ready' 'yeah' he replies, in what can be called a breathless whisper juxtaposed against a shot at 16 seconds of  a man looking thoughtful or  perhaps perplexed as he stares into space. The centred shot establishes the setting which appears to be the unknowns living room and the lights have been dimmed to perhaps indicate a comfortable setting. However the television has been shrouded in shadow which may indicate that it may be a focal factor later on in the film- this strikes resemblance to the ring which used this technique for the antagonist character.

As the protagonist says ' yes' at 17 seconds this shot is shown of an old fashioned metronome, ticking from side to side. This  may be a form of symbolism depicting that it is counting down to an important event.Generally it gives us the impression that the occurrence will have a negative impact on the characters within the film. The metronome is continued as a sound bridge which again makes us feel uncomfortable.I really like this idea of the metronome sound bridge and we could use something similar e.g.a ticking clock which can symbolise many different things including: frustration, betrayal and  death so therefore is extremely versatile.
With the demoralising effect of the metronome, comes another intertitile which establishes what other films the production company has conceived such as Paranormal activity which was a huge box office success. This makes the audience want to watch it especially if they have watched the above film before.
At 25 seconds this establishing shot is quickly shown on screen, what appears to be a normal house but the canted angle of the trees leaning towards the house perhaps represents danger giving us an indication of the superlativeness of the situation. This is again emphasised by the almost picturesque appearance of the whole setting and the lighting is light which makes the position of the trees seem less formidable but is still quite strange. This is something we can experiment on in our own film, angling is a very intriguing process and I would love to create something that represents a hyper/warped reality.

At 26 seconds a female voice ( supposedly the female in this shot ) asks uncertainly 'Sweetie?' as if something has happened to the boy and she is trying to find out what it is. She  is hunched over the boy frowning down upon him which could be remonstrating her question. The boy seems quite young shown by the embrace that they are in and the childishness of the pyjamas.Unsurprisingly the shot is extremely dark, despite the fact we know that it is daytime as we can see through the windows.

At 27 seconds a new setting of a kitchen is shown in which the male says 'Moira' presumably the females name and the closeness of the relationship suggest that they are perhaps married. The child seems quite thoughtful perhaps an indication of his character and the parents distracted- the mother on the phone whilst tieing up the males tie.In all it seems as though it is a normal family but perhaps not all is what meets the eye.
At 28 seconds the noise of hysterical laughter comes on the screen and in this shot the couple look intimate( evident through the way they are leant towards each other), but the laughter in my personal opinion is quite eerie, seeming quite out of place. It seems as though the sound has been pre-recorded but has been synchronized to look realistic.
In this scene at 29 seconds is another example of a happy family shot where a small baby is introduced being bounced on the fathers lap.All the family are inclined towards the baby which suggests that it is important within the film.Perhaps the baby gets hurt?
Then at 30 seconds is the boy climbing a ladder a contrast between the previous shot as this seems more mysterious and out of the blue.Perhaps he is running away from something/trying to find something out?The lighting is dark here as in many of the other shots and the fact that his face is obscured could be that he is doing something that he shouldn't be doing.

But leaving us perplexed as to what the boys fate is comes the words insidious is.
Insidious is what you ask? Like the beginning the font is the same but the meaning of insidious perhaps is interpreted a different way and is just reinforcing the encompassing feeling of unease increasing as the film progresses.

At 33 seconds it changes into is insidious.Translating the whole sentence it becomes insidious is is insidious which perplexes the audience even more as the text doesn't make sense compelling the audience to find out what it denotes.

Then at 34 seconds comes the dialogue ' he's not in a coma', which comes as a relief to the audience, though the setting indicates that they are in a hospital. This implies that though he is not in critical condition, the fact that he is in hospital leaves us feeling sympathetic for the protagonists.Bright white lighting has been used to implement the clinical feel of the setting, mirrored by the somber expressions on the characters faces. The fact that the female is clutching her chin makes it seem as though she is fearful and perhaps questioning as to what really happened in the accident.
At 35 seconds you see the couple in the foreground, where they have been slightly blurred to make the hospital bed with the boy on it the predominant focus. The colours that have been used is often associated with hospital environments- green, blue  and white generally very clean colours that is not associated with danger.
' I don't know what to call it' she cries, her face haggard and pale, free of make up, her hair scraped back.Looking away from the camera implements her confusion although at this stage we don't know as to what she is talking about. One of its unique selling points is the way that it is so enigmatic as one question is answered it leaves more answers in its wake.In terms of lighting it reverts back to its normal state. After this the intertitle ' insidious is' is repeated.

Juxtaposed against this shot it suggests that she is insidious , meaning that something is spreading harmfully in a subtle manner. This could show that perhaps they wont notice until its to late. Her expression is inquisitive which may perhaps be foolish , its as though she is searching for something like the boy was and she could get hurt.
She carries on walking and then at 42 seconds she peers into a door way which seems messy and cluttered.Perhaps it is the boys room as the decor is blue traditionally associated with males. Here the diegetic sound of her footsteps have been enhanced added at a later point in the film, to really stand out against the otherwise silent house. The house seems empty which makes us feel that the clock is ticking closer as we have that 6th sense which makes us thing she is in danger, though she may not know it herself.
Again another shot of her looking confused and wary, perhaps she senses something is amiss. It seems as though a green light has been used her giving it a creepy effect. At this point we as an audience are thinking that she should probably leave her house but of course she doesn't
Here the rocking horse is rocking although there is no one on it,which gives us our first piece of real evidence that her house is haunted. The sound has been synchronised and enhanced artificially and still the sound bridge of the metronome is continuing. Both sounds together give it a negative atmosphere and suddenly the house doesn't seem so welcoming.

As you can see by this shot she reaches out a hand to stop the chair rocking. What could seem so innocent as a children's toy has become an object of horror which is quite intriguing given the context.
The intertitle 'insidious is' is repeated for the third time.
At 49 seconds it cuts to a shot of the child seemingly closing the door behind him.The attire indicates that it is nighttime and perhaps he is wondering what the disturbance or has had a bad dream. The door creaks slowly and once again is the focus of the shot drawing your attention to the child.
At 51 seconds the scene changes to a window where a person has cast a shadow over it , making us feel quite scared as we are not quite sure what is going to happen.Blue has been used to cast a harsh glow over it as well as coal black for the outline of the shadow to really highlight the importance of this occurrence. For the 4th time 'insidious is' is repeated only this time the background is not black but it is a red the colour of blood and a splotch of it is smeared from the letters.
At 53 seconds the women glances at the baby monitor and appears to be at the piano.
The high angle shot implies that something may be happening to the baby.
She looks at it again in confusion and another high angle shot has been used although the monitor has been blurred perhaps again suggesting that the baby is in mortal danger.
She then walks towards the stairs and here a low angle shot has been used as she looks up towards the stairs to where the baby is presumably sleeping and the lighting here is really key as the light glaring down from the ceiling shows.I really like this shot and I think we should definitely include more shots that are versatile this year, to present ourselves a challenge.
She then picks up the phone and ' no' is screamed by a male voice which makes her drop the phone with fright. The light glares down on her capturing her look of shock and fear. However it shrouds the rest of the setting in shadow again giving a sense of obscurity to the film. You then hear the baby crying and she goes into the room to check on him.
Insidious's inter title is repeated again .Dialogue is then shown mainly being ' there is something in there with him' which could be suggesting that he has been possessed.A new character is introduced an elderly person bed ridden which suggests that perhaps she is an expert in ghostly occurrences.

The male character tries frantically to open the door which seems as though it has been locked.Perhaps it is a poltergeist playing tricks on the family?
The family then all run out frantically as the bad draws ever nearer, it seems as though time is being sped up.
'We have someone who can help' is the words said as another female character enters the room to witness this horrific scene. The place is in havoc, a cloth with a bloody footprint in the middle- perhaps it is a symbol of what will happen? The male is clutching the child sleeping or dead and the female looks up frantic with the notion that this can be stopped. The look in her eyes is almost pleading.

This appears to be some sort of instrument that detects sounds perhaps, meaning they have resorted to desperate measures as their lives lie uncertain.' we've found some wiring lots of bugs' says the male specialist. However a middle aged female cries ' i don't think wiring is the problem' and looks up to the ceiling in a low angled mid shot.' I wanna leave' ' I wanna leave this house 'says the mother to her husband as she becomes increasingly frightened by each turn of occurrences and cant seem to be to handle it any longer.

They then discover this grotesque drawing of what appears to be a monster sketched in oil pastels and generally seems quite foreboding.Perhaps it is a premonition of what will happen whether it be soon or later.
My notion is proved as this gruesome being comes to,life behind him.The fact he is red is interesting as it often connotes danger and evil. His eye is perhaps the main eye grabber as it is inhuman and seems to watch you even though your only an audience member.A lot of flash editing has been used here and in previous shots especially when it is important scenes, allowing us a glimpse into the films world but never seeing enough to satisfy our appetite.A tracking shot is then used as someone walks down the door accompanied by a shot of the middle aged female saying ' its not your house that is haunted it's your son' which although does not shock the audience it does shock the characters.
In response to this fast paced editing is used displaying a wide variety of disturbing images such as the one which i have shown here. The contrast of the shot has been darkened but yet really highlights the red of the hand print against the child's foot against it.
This is my favourite shot as the black and white format really accentuates traditional movie conventions, giving it a stylistic feel of old movies. The people standing there in this off centred shot seem like a mixture of china dolls and ghosts- generally quite monochrome. The monochrome stylism is something that I would love to replicate but I feel that it is quite niche and thus could only be used in the fantasy/horror genre.
The film then ends with the name of the film.
