How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
For our media AS foundation portfolio we used a variety of differential, technological equipment including the following:
Primarily the camera was the most important aspect as it captured our footage, in which we used a variation of effects predominantly black and white throughout a dream sequence which heavily contrasted against the colour sequenced shots. As well as the use of colour we also used the camera to implement various angles e.g. a canted closeup shot of Zoe peering out of grass, which is effective in establishing fear; one of the key concepts of horror genre.
The camera was also incredible in allowing us to be more discliplinary in regards to shots.
For example with the media knowledge that we had attained it allowed us to be more critical and actually pick out flaws in our work, instead of just keeping a shot because we thought it looked good; you have to film several times to ensure that we were working to the best of our ability.Admittedly at the beginning this approach wasn't used as frequently but towards the end we used it progressively.
As we transcended from the camera to tripod towards the end of our project, it allowed us to experiment with still shots; juxtaposing against previous shots filmed with handheld camera. This allowed the viewer to identify with both the film and the characters involved as well as increasing the overall fluidity of the film. This also allows easier overall comprehension for the target audience which is good as it means that the appeal will be higher and therefore if it was an actual film then it would generate profitable financial income. Our film can be compared to The Blair Witch Project through the usage of amateur camera work, a film which was highly successful and heavily influential on our final piece. However to add some rigidity the still tripod shots were added.
As we finalised our filming, we moved on to using Adobe Premiere.Firstly we uploaded the footage and experimented with sequencing shots, cutting shots and if we felt we needed it additional shots were included.Next we played with effects such as time lapse and length eg. a slow frame may be contrasted against a short frame which implements a sense of suspense,a range of transitions as well as a short voice over at the end of our piece and soundtrack music. However we didn't use a great deal of sound effects in our piece which I feel we should have included but we had run out of time.
Adobe also allowed us to to perform a variating mixture of basic and complex editing such as the layering of non-diegetic sound, which I had no prior knowledge of beforehand and is a skill which can be used consistently.
Another fundamental technological part of the project was Blogger in form of an on line diary. It was here where the blogs were split into 5 sections:Preliminary task( starting out), Research and planning, filming,Editing and evaluation, which we grouped together to give the examiner a clear view as to where everything is. I have also discovered that Blogger is an extremely effective website as it is easy to use as well as being able to export pictures/videos fairly simply. Conclusively I have found out many differential methods to use when constructing, researching and planning a film.
Perhaps one of the most important parts of the piece was YouTube because it proved beneficial software for showing our film. This is because it was easily accessible by anyone as well as being simple to function.Another positive of using YouTube is the opportunity it allows to share films with other YouTube viewers/members/family/friends which makes it easier to receive feedback. We discovered to create and maintain a youtube account, upload and publish the videos we made as well as the addition of adding speech bubbles and annotations.
